D1642. Pair of Blue and White Tobacco Jars with Brass Covers

Delft, circa 1785

Each with a claw mark in blue for De Klaauw (The Claw) Factory

Each boldly painted on the front with a cartouche enclosed within foliate scrolls and patterned panels issuing further foliate scrolls and whorls, surmounted by an urn of flowers and leaves, and inscribed either RAPPEE DEHOLLANDEE or STRAASBÚRGER. The hammered brass covers surmounted by a mushroom-shaped knop.
