NOTE
Ceramic and ornamental shoe models have captivated collectors for centuries, but the tradition of crafting miniature shoes dates back thousands of years. For instance, ancient Egyptian tombs have revealed miniature sandals, placed with the dead as part of burial rituals. Similarly, in Persia, pottery included small shoe-shaped vessels, highlighting the long-standing cultural and symbolic significance of miniature shoes across different civilizations.
In the seventeenth century, shoemaking evolved into a highly decorative and skilled craft, inspiring the creation of miniature shoes as intricate artistic objects. These miniatures, often crafted with the same detail as full-sized shoes, symbolized prosperity and affection. They were also linked to customs such as placing boots on newlyweds’ cars, a tradition symbolizing the sharing of wealth and wishing good fortune to the couple. Another custom, from the Middle Ages through the nineteenth century, involved concealing shoes within the walls of homes, a practice thought to offer protection from misfortune and to ward off witches.
By the eighteenth century, exchanging ceramic model shoes became a fashionable practice among the aristocracy. These miniatures, celebrated for their intricate designs and association with luxury, became highly prized collectibles in elite circles, reflecting both artistic craftsmanship and social status.
